Both the Bushfire season and COVID-19 have demonstrated the power and importance of a strong service sector. Illawarra Legal Centre has shown that being grounded in our community and having that connectedness, has allowed us to operate flexibly and responsively to unexpected developments.

It is Homelessness Week, and we are being reminded that currently 405,000 Australian women over 55 are at risk of becoming homeless. Today saw the launch of two reports into homelessness – both excellent, but heart-wrenching.

The first is called “At Risk: Understanding the population size and demographics of older women at risk of homelessness in Australia

The other is “Older Women in the Private Rental Sector: Unaffordable, Substandard and Insecure Housing

The Victims Rights Commissioner has proposed changes to Victims Support which will deny victims-survivors of crime the supports they have a right to and need. We call on the Commissioner and the Attorney General to stop proposed Victims Support changes and start victim-survivor led review.

We all know the value and the importance of community legal centres. We deliver essential legal advice. We advocate for clients, give people the power and capacity to make their own arguments. We analyse the law and argue for reform. We reach across communities to connect people.

30 Year Celebration

The Illawarra Legal Centre held it’s 30th Birthday Celebration at the Wollongong Art Gallery on 18th March 2016, at which we celebrated the dedication of our wonderful volunteers over the last 30 years.
