Providing free confidential legal advice and financial counselling services to students.
What We Do
We provide free and independent financial counselling and legal advice to current University of Wollonong (UOW) students.
The UOW Student Service provides free and confidential advice and referrals.
Funded by the University of Wollongong’s Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF), this service is available to all current domestic and international students. The service is provided by qualified lawyers and financial counsellors of the Illawarra Legal Centre.
Student Legal Clinic
The Student Legal Clinic provides preliminary confidential legal advice to current UOW students.
We encourage and support students in solving their own legal problems. Ongoing assistance in individual cases or court representation will not be provided; however, appropriate referrals with be offered where required.
Appointments are available over the phone or in-person on Wollongong Campus and are usually scheduled on Monday and Tuesday during office hours.
The Student Legal Clinic provides preliminary advice in relation to the following areas of law:
- Victims of crime
- Employment law
- Discrimination law
- Domestic violence and ADVOs – complainants only
- Minor criminal matters like fines and traffic offences
- Credit and debt matters
- Motor vehicle accidents – property damage
- Intellectual property
- Family law such as child support – carers only
- Wills, Powers of Attorney and Enduring Guardianship
- Consumer law
- Access to information
- Neighbourhood disputes
The Student Legal Clinic provides preliminary referrals in relation to the following areas of law:
- Residential tenancy
- Immigration
- Centrelink problems
The Student Legal Clinic does not provide advice in relation to the following areas of law:
- Taxation
- Accounting
- Financial Advice
- Conveyancing
- Personal injury – apart from victims of crime
Student Financial Counselling Program
The Student Financial Counselling Program provides preliminary confidential advice and advocacy to current UOW students.
We encourage and support students in strengthening their ability to manage their finances. Personalised support services are designed to find the best solutions for unique needs, with appropriate referrals offered when required.
Appointments are available over the phone or in-person on Wollongong campus and are usually scheduled on Tuesday and Wednesday during office hours.
This service can assist you if you are experiencing any of the following:
- Not sure how to develop a budget
- Having trouble keeping up with credit card repayments and loans
- Behind on your rent or mortgage
- Unable to pay your bills on time
- Receiving disconnection notices for phone or electricity
- Unable to pay fines or infringements
- Worried about your car being repossessed
- Car accident claims
- Taxation debt
- Being harassed by debt collectors
- Overcommitted with debt
- Facing debt recovery through the courts
- Contemplating or facing bankruptcy.
This service does not provide legal advice and are not financial planners
If you are facing legal action, get free legal advice as soon as possible. Ask your Financial Counsellor about making an appointment with one of ILC’s solicitors.
